Pregnancy is examined in three parts. The first trimester is the early period of pregnancy and the adaptation period for the mother. Mother’s systemic diseases are controlled and steps are taken to have a healthy pregnancy. Basic blood tests such as blood count, blood group, urine test, thyroid test and fasting glucose level should be checked. Nuchal translucency measurement is performed to reveal the fetal genetic risk.

In the second trimester, anomaly scans are completed and other blood tests are repeated together with blood glucose challenge test. Baby’s growth is followed with ultrasound measurements.

The third trimester is the period in which the mother becomes heavier, the development of the baby is completed and the decision for the way of delivery is taken.

These three parts each have unique characteristics in the follow-up. Some vitamins and iron supplement might be recommended by the physician. Pregnancy follow-up visits are usually performed at intervals of 2-4 weeks, and more frequently when a problem is suspected. A healthy and uneventful birth is more likely with a meticulous pregnancy follow-up.
