Intrauterine insemination is an infertility treatment method which is briefly defined as the placement into the uterus of sperms taken from the husband. The main point is the meticulous preparation of the sperms in the laboratory.

The ovaries are stimulated minimally and after about 10 days the sperms taken from the husband are pepared in the laboratory to select the most motile and morphologically best ones. Insemination might be considered in couples having no serious sperm problem and one or both tubes in the woman should be patent. For the stimulation of the ovaries, pills or needles are used at low dosages.

Insemination treatment is initiated on the second or third day of the menstrual period, the ovaries are followed by ultrasonography every 2-3 days and when the leading follicular size exceeds 17-18 mm, the triggering injection is given. Two days later, sperms taken from the husband are prepared in the laboratory to select the best sperms which are then placed into the uterus under normal gynecological examination with a very thin catheter. It is an easy procedure causing no pain. Blood pregnancy test is done 12-14 days following insemination.

Intrauterine insemination treatment is an infertility treatment lasting 10-12 days and has a 15-30% chance of success.
