Abortion is the termination of pregnancy within the first 12 weeks by a sudden hemorrhage or disappearance of fetal heartbeat. Abortion risk is around 20%.

Usually we know that the problem of embryos, especially the genetic problem, leads to miscarriage. Occasionally, maternal problems may lead to the termination of pregnancy. The mother may have uncontrolled diabetes, thyroid disease, rheumatologic disease, genetic or clotting disease, or uterine anomaly. But it is not necessary to investigate all of these causes in a woman who has just one abortion. On the other hand, detailed gynecological examination, tube film (HSG), blood hormone tests, genetic analysis should be performed to investigate the possible problems of women who have previously had two or more abortions. But most of these tests turn out to be normal.

Women who have recurrent abortions should be counselled and relieved that the ongoing pregnancy rate is about 60%. Psychological support is very important and beneficial.
